The Hmong International Freedom Festival comes to Saint Paul for the 42nd time on June 29-30. Here’s what you need to know about this celebration of Hmong history and culture and the largest Hmong sports event in the United States.
The festival is held at Como Park’s McMurray Field, 1151 Jessamine Ave W.
Saturday June 29 | 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sunday, June 30 | 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Twin Cities has been called the “Hmong Capital of the Nation” because it is the top metro area in the U.S. for Hmong population.
How many people attend the Hmong International Freedom Festival?
Considered the Olympics of the Hmong American community, the festival is the largest Hmong sports event in the United States. In previous years, attendance has been over 57,000 in just two days.
What sports are played at the Festival?
One of the most popular games played is sepak takraw, or Kato, a game that looks a lot like volleyball, but prohibits the use of one’s hands and arms. Other sports played at the event include soccer, volleyball, flag football, corn hole and tuj lub (also known as top-spin).
What type of entertainment is there at the Festival?
Breakdancing is also a very big component of the festival. The athletic style of street dance has become increasingly popular among Hmong-American youth.

Is there shopping at the Hmong International Freedom Festival?
In addition to sports, there are merchandise booths, delicious food stands, and a main stage where dancers and singers will perform throughout the two days.
Is there event parking?
Parking is available at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds for $10/car (CASH ONLY). Shuttle buses will provide rides between the parking area and the festival from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
