Break Point: Two Minnesota Athletes and the Road to Title IX
December 14, 2024 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Overview
Two teenagers took on the unequal system of high school athletics in 1972, setting a legal precedent for schools nationwide. Join sisters Sheri Brenden, author of Break Point: Two Minnesota Athletes and the Road to Title IX, and Peg Brenden, a tennis player who filed a federal lawsuit challenging a rule that prevented her from joining her high school team, for a talk about a significant piece of “Girlhood" history. Based on news coverage, court transcripts, oral interviews and firsthand experience, they will describe how two girls unlocked the gate to athletic opportunities previously only open to boys.
Come for the Girlhood (It’s complicated) exhibit, then stay for the program! The talk starts at 2:00 p.m. in the 3M Auditorium and will be followed by a book signing in the lobby. Registration is recommended, but not required. This program is included with site admission.
This program is made possible by the Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
