100 Years of F. Scott. Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’
April 13, 2025 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Overview
A Zoom seminar co-hosted by Dr. Lynette Reini-Grandell and Dr. Patrick O’Donnell
Published in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece has become a mythic exploration of the American Dream, self-invention, and the cost of misplaced idealism.
This talk will examine The Great Gatsby within its 1920s social and cultural context, exploring Gatsby as an American Lancelot, devoted to courtly love in a world of materialism and carelessness. It will also consider Fitzgerald’s influences, including James Joyce’s “The Dead” and the poetry of John Keats, which shaped the novel’s lyrical and elegiac style.
